Springfield, Mo. - Grand Valley State University kicked off the NCAA Tournament on Friday, defeating Wayne State 5-2 in Springfield, Mo. The No. 42 Lakers took two of three doubles matches and then won four of five singles competitions to win the match. GVSU advances to the second round against Drury at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.

The match got underway in doubles competition, where Tony Dang and Patrick Polus picked up an 8-6 win in the top flight. Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson won 8-3 at the number three spot, while Patrick Troy and Renato Tamashiro lost a close 9-8 (5-0) match at number two.

In singles play, only three matches went the entire way. Tamashiro dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at number two singles, while Troy won 6-4, 6-0 in the number three spot. Brock Plangger won in the six spot, dropping just one set in a 6-1, 6-0 win. Alex Switzer won at number five singles when his opponent retired, while Dang and Claus were both underway in singles when the match ended.
